Accounting for Bentleigh businesses

The Centre Road strip is one of Melbourne's great local high streets, cafés, retailers, hair and beauty, health clinics. I help Bentleigh's owner-operators keep the compliance tight and the margins visible.

Individual returns from $390 · Business tax & advisory from $250/month.

Local, and genuinely nearby

Strip-retail and hospitality businesses live and die on margins, rosters and rent, so my Bentleigh work leans heavily on clean books, payroll done right, and a clear read on what each month actually made. Fixed monthly fee, no surprises, and I come to you or meet online.

Small business in Bentleigh

Centre Road is the spine of Bentleigh's economy, and it's genuinely dense: cafés and restaurants, bakeries, hairdressers and beauty rooms, physios and dentists, specialty retail, all mostly owner-operated rather than franchised. Bentleigh East adds a second layer of trades and home-based services working across the south-east.

What these businesses share is thin margins and heavy staffing. Wages, superannuation, penalty rates and rent move together, and when they drift, they drift quietly. An owner can have a busy month and still go backwards without seeing it until the BAS lands. Getting the bookkeeping right isn't administrative housekeeping here, it's the only way to see the business clearly enough to make decisions.

What that usually means for your tax

  • Payroll, superannuation and Single Touch Payroll, with Payday Super from 1 July 2026 factored in
  • Labour-cost tracking against takings, so you can see your wage percentage month to month
  • BAS and GST coding for mixed supplies, where some sales are taxable and some aren't
  • Fit-out, equipment and lease costs claimed correctly, including depreciation on the kit

Questions I hear from Bentleigh

Almost certainly. Labour percentage is the number one lever in hospitality, and most owners can't see theirs clearly. I set up your bookkeeping so wages, super and penalty rates are tracked properly against takings, then review it with you so you can act on it, not just file it.

Yes, and it's usually better that way. Your business structure, wages or drawings, and personal deductions interact, and doing both sides together means nothing is missed and the total tax position is planned, not accidental.

From 1 July 2026 super has to be paid at the same time as wages instead of quarterly, and it needs to reach the fund within seven business days. The amount you owe doesn't change, but the timing does, so the quarterly super buffer some businesses rely on disappears. I map what that does to your weekly cash flow before it happens rather than after.

Get advice before you sign, not after. How the purchase price is split between goodwill, plant and stock affects what you can depreciate, whether the sale qualifies as a going concern changes the GST treatment, and the lease terms will shape your break-even for years. An hour of planning here is the cheapest hour you'll spend.
