The levers that actually move a big tax bill, in plain English: the top brackets, super caps, Division 293, the CGT clock, and the traps between them.

Who this one is for

This guide is for people on big incomes: partners and senior professionals, business owners paying themselves properly, executives with big salaries and the tax bills that follow them around. Not because high earners get secret rules, but because at those incomes the ordinary rules start doing extraordinary things, usually to you.

Above $190,000, the top rate plus the Medicare levy takes 47c of each extra dollar. Past $250,000, super quietly gets taxed harder too, and most people find that out from a bill they did not expect. The levers that answer all of this are boring, legal and time-sensitive, and almost every one of them closes on 30 June or the day you sign a contract.

If your return is one salary and a couple of deductions, this is more than you need; the deductions guide is the better download. This one is for the point where the numbers are big enough that the order you do things in starts costing real money.

Two identical incomes, two different bills

Two people can earn exactly the same amount and pay noticeably different tax, without either of them doing anything clever. One knew their cap space in May, timed a sale past the 12-month mark, and prepaid a deductible expense in June. The other found out what was possible in October. This guide is the May version.
